From a Forgotten Place—A Discussion with Michael J. Dowling

On Saturday, June 10 at 4pm, the New York Irish History Roundtable will present an unusual one-on-one discussion with a unique Irish New Yorker.

Michael J. Dowling is the President and Chief Executive Officer of Northwell Health Services, the largest and most complex healthcare organization in the New York metropolitan area. He is also an immigrant from Knockaderry, a poor rural town in County Limerick which was during his years there, Dowling says, a place that time forgot. A former Fordham University director and New York State Commissioner of Social Services, Michael Dowling worked part-time while at school, and at summer jobs in Ireland, England and America, to pay for his undergraduate degree. A clear symbol of success and achievement, he remains committed to improvement in America and in Ireland.

In this unique discussion, Roundtable host Linda Dowling Almeida will speak with Michael Dowling about his experiences in Knockaderry and how his life in Ireland affected his ambitions for education, personal progress, and public service. She will examine with him the issues he faced in deciding to emigrate. And she will ask him about his early perceptions of Americans and America, and about how and where he settled in New York during his early days here.
